The meaning of this research lies in helping readers understand Moby Dick deeply and learn more knowledge both inside and outside this book. Moby Dick is such a long novel and its first half is filled with knowledge of whales, which does not have much relationship with the clue. For those who are interested in this book, but find it too boring to read the whole novel completely or difficult to understand this novel, this research will be helpful.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The purpose of this research study is to find out symbolism in Moby Dick in a completed way. That is to give readers#8217; a general and comprehensive impression of symbolism in Moby Dick, which will be organized clearly and easy to understand compared with other undergraduates#8217; research. First, basic introduction to symbols in Moby Dick will be arranged. Then, analysis of deep meaning behind symbols in the novel will be introduced.The most difficult thing of this thesis writing is trying to raise author#8217;s own opinion on this topic and make it clearly different from other students#8217; writing since this research has been done by too many people.

3. 国内外研究现状

The research on symbolism in Moby Dick is not a strange one. There have been plenty of researches on this topic done by so many scholars. A large number of college students have also chosen this topic for their thesis writing. Although it is the same topic that they research and the content of their research is close, the results of their research do not have the same structure and they do not follow the same clues. Some of them focus on explanation of symbols. Some give more attention to the research on deep meanings. They did not give readers a general and clear impression on symbolism or philosophy in this novel.
