Many scholars have studied the translation of movie titles and subtitles from the perspective of cultural differences, translation methods, and cultural transmission and so on.In the On the Translation of Movie Titles from the Cultural Perspective, Wei Mengfen demonstrated the influence of the cultural differences on the translation of movie titles. In general, she came up with three major factors: word-meaning association, difference of the cognitive thinking, and idioms. Thus, she proposed four principles of movie titles translation from the cultural perspective: value of information, value of culture, artistic value and commercial value. At last, she illustrated the application of domestication, foreignization, and the combination of the two methods on the translation of movie titles. As an important medium, movie carries the functions of showing the local culture to the world, transmitting the cultural mindset and promoting the cultural exchange among countries. Xing Jinfeng said in her paper On the English Movie Titles Translation from the Perspective of Cultural Transmission. She demonstrated four expressions of cultural transmission: way of thinking, value, religious belief, aesthetic concept and cultural image. After analyzing the language features of the English movie titles, she gave us four translation methods: free translation, transliteration, literal translation and compiling. Ou Chujun also studied the cultural differences on the movie titles translation in his paper On China and Western Movie Titles Translation from the Perspective of Cultural Differences. He worked out four main different aspects: culture symbol, ethics and morals, values and religious culture. Following the differences were the translation strategies: literal translation, free translation and transliteration.Chen Mingya (2013) thought that translation was not only the transformation between languages but also the dialogue and exchange between two cultures. He pointed that the differences of movie titles translation among Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were the result of collision and fusion between cultures. Then he analyzed the differences in detail from the perspective of hermeneutics.

2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案

The object of the study is the Differences in the Translation of English Movie Titles among Hong Kong, Tai Wan and Mainland China from the Cultural Perspective. By studying this, the author intends to solve the following questions:1. What are the differences in the Translation of English Movie Titles among Hong Kong, Tai Wan and Mainland China?2. Where do these differences come from?3. How should we view the differences from the perspective of culture?4. How can we apply what we found into translating the foreign movie titles, even subtitles?Following the aims of the study, we will choose a dozens of English movies as our subjects. First, we will find the different editions of the same movie title translation from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Second, we analyze the differences among these editions. Third, we explore the hidden causes of the difference. Besides, we will have a brief comparison of history, social system, dialects and other aspects among the three areas. Finally, we try to give our suggestions to the translation of the foreign movie titles.
