With the acceleration of economic globalization, the international business communication is more closed than before. As an important language tool in business communication, English plays an important role in business negotiation and correspondence. In order to create a favorable atmosphere in a negotiation, businessmen usually need to use euphemism to express their view and desires politely and appropriately.

As euphemism has been widely used in English, it will be of a great help for us to learn the language and cross-cultural communication if we know better about the application of euphemism. Meanwhile, it#8217;s also important for business people to learn euphemistic expression as it#8217;s very useful in business negotiation.

english euphemism is a widespread social phenomenon in a language. it helps to make the communication go smoothly. this thesis begins with the function of euphemism, and tries to analyze the application and translation of euphemism. therefore, we can prove that english euphemism is not only an important component in business english, but also a favorable method for both parties to gain profit in a competition.

3. 国内外研究现状

Domestic research status: Changyin Gan (2004) says that amicable trade relations are one of key factors which are used to evaluate the success of a negotiation. Lincong Yang(2005) demonstrates that euphemism plays an important role in business communication according to the politeness principle in pragmatics, and combined with the actual example in international business communication. Zhongxia Mao (2007) analyzes the euphemistic expression in business negotiation and correspondence. Yuhui Lin (2009) summarizes the common grammar means of euphemism in business negotiation on the basis of the meaning and function of euphemism, and put forward the view that proper use of euphemism helps to achieve the purpose in a negotiation.

Overseas research status: British linguist says that politeness principle should also include appropriateness, tolerance, praise, modesty, consent, and sympathy in his book. Brown and Levinson puts forward the face theory, the core of which is face threatening acts, shortened as FAs. A Dictionary of Euphemisms and Other Doubletalk, Published by British linguist Hugh Rawson, reflects the research achievement in euphemism study from British and American linguists.
