1. 研究目的与意义

Gone With the Wind, published in 1936, is the only novel written by modern American female writer Margaret Mitchell. When it is published, the novel has sold millions of copies, which much more than expected. Its sales break many records among the publishing circles, and it is famous all over the world. As a great master in the modern literary word, Margaret Mitchell gains a world-wide award--The Pulitzer prize, because of this singular work. The novel mainly describes the life of Scarlett, the daughter of Tara Farm#8217;s master during the American Civil War. Regarding the triangular love between Scarlett, Ashley and Rhett as the clue, the novel depicts a wide and prosperous picture of the social life of the South in America. Not only the rich content of the novel but also the complex plots and the contradiction between the figures of the novel have an important artistic effect on shaping the characters in the novel. Among all the roles, Scarlett is the most successful one who is full of conflicting and complicated features. Before the rise of feminism, a woman in a man''s pen is always the traditional 'Lady', is the ideal woman in their heart, just like a beautiful vase. In this view, Scarlett may be a absolute negative role. She is more enterprising and motivated than men and never mind achieving her aims by any means. I have been deeply attracted by this Scarlett. She is so out of the ordinary. In that day and age, women always have been fettered by traditions, but Scarlett is different. She is courageous enough to strive for the life her want proactively, even uses her marriage as a means. To comprehending Scarlett more intuitively and thoroughly, I try to analysis her personality from her marriages to show the eternal charm of Scarlett in the novel.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

At this thesis, I try to analysis Scarlett''s personality from her marriages. I think this is a great angle and cut-in point. At that time, there never have a woman like her, used marriage as a means to achieve aims. In her first marriage, the marriage with Charles, she is just a spoiled brat, all she think about is how to revenge Ashley, her first love, who married with his cousin. Therefore, she marries with Charles, the man she doesn''t love after Ashley refuses to elope with her. Then, America is embroiled in war. Her husband joins the army and sacrifices, she quickly becomes a widow in the American Civil War. She buried her youth in black dress because of her hasty decision. In the war countless people lost their lives, including Scarlett''s mother, the mainstay of Tara Farm. As the eldest girl of her family, Scarlett does all in her full strength to keep her farm. She asks Rhett , a speculative trader, for help but being refused. Then her second marriage comes. To solve her home, she have no choice but to marry with Frank Kennedy, her younger sister#8217;s fiance, to get money. Though many people despise her for her remarriage, she achieves her aim, she keeps her farm, she and her family are no longer suffering from poverty and hunger. In addition, she doesn''t care about anything, whether others#8217; groundless talk or the younger sister#8217;s hostility. At this marriage, Scarlett gets a platform to show her ability to do business. She takes control of the economic right, shows a strong attitude towards her husband. She manages the timber mill by herself, sets out early and returns late everyday. She looks down on her husband because he is so inefficient. Soon afterwards, her husband died, Scarlett becomes a rich widow again. Rhett ,a rich speculative trader, proposes to her at that time. Being impressed by him, Scarlett accepts his proposal and meets her third marriage. In some ways, it may be the most happiness marriage for her. Scarlett and Rhett have similar character, so Rhett can understand Scarlett behavior. He would never limit Scarlett#8217;s thought and behavior. The only problem between them is Scarlett#8217;s #8220;love#8221; for Ashley. She hopes to get Ashley to meet her inner regret, which makes Rhett feel uncomfortable. Misfortune comes suddenly, their daughter Bonnie dies when she riding, their second child has abortion. Their family brakes, Rhett leaves alone, Scarlett realizes that her true lover is Rhett but it is too late for her to save. She could do nothing but to stay in suit to wait for Rhett to come back. She could only tell herself, #8220;After all, tomorrow is another day.#8221; Scarlett likes to be independent. Nobody can influence her thought, she just follows her own wish. She is both an angel and a devil. Why she marries? What she thinks at that time? What is her attitude towards her husband? I hope I can completely express her personality by depth analysis. 3. 国内外研究现状

Since its publication in 1936, Gone with the Wind has received a lot of attention from readers. But as a popular fiction, Gone with the Wind has not been paid enough attention by the western literary world because of its special perspective. It describes the American Civil War from the view of the owners of the southern plantations. They doubt the description of their behavior have often been prettified. Meanwhile many readers only treat this novel as a simple love story, being fascinated by its intricate story yet neglecting its hidden values. In a manner of speaking, Gone with the Wind has a very awkward status at that time. Not until later it is accepted by the western literary world. Then the literary critics, on the basis of their respective knowledge and understanding, have given different evaluations about this novel. Because of its time character, most of their researches focus on the historical background of American Civil War, the abolitionist thought, the awakening of female self-consciousness, its positive effect on the cause of women#8217;s liberation and the cultural discrepancy between the North and the South. In china, this novel is introduced as a book of ideological enlightenment, Scarlett has been a symbol of feminism, being used to advocate the ideological emancipation and personality liberation, value personality development and liberty development. This novel promotes the awakening of female self-consciousness, plays a positive role in women''s awakening and liberation movement in 1930s and 1940s. So in our country, most of the researches focus on the liberation movement and the feminism.
