1. 研究目的与意义
the study on english translation of huozhe from the perspective of adaptation theory is both of academic and practical meaning.
on the one hand, the study is of great value both to pragmatics and translation studies. relating adaptation theory put forward by the famous linguist jef verschueren to translation, it obviously enriches the development of pragmatics. at the same time, it provides a new thought for translation study, making novel translation more powerful in explaining cultural difference.
on the other hand, chinese novel translation, as a part of literary translation, plays an increasingly important role in carrying forward chinese culture in the process of globalization. because english is the most widely used langue in the world, so translating chinese novel into english is an effective way to make the world know more about chinese and let chinese culture go global. and the study on novel translation will surely provide useful enlightenment for translators. huozhe tells of people’s tolerance of sufferings and their positive attitudes towards the world through describing the miserable life of the hero fugui in a range of social changes, which helps foreigners learn about chinese history and cultural and social characteristics at that time. there are some studies on the english translation of huozhe from other perspectives such as functional equivalence, ecology and literary reform, but relating it to adaptation theory is very few. therefore, this study will help complete the study of english translation of huozhe.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
the thesis studies strategies of chinese novel translation from the perspective of adaptation theory by taking michael berry’s english translation huozhe as an example. it aims to study the following questions:
1.what factors are considered when the translator uses adaptation theory in the translation of huozhe?
2.how adaptation theory is used in novel translation to achieve transmission of cultural information?
3. 国内外研究现状
1.previous studies on adaptation theory
1.1previous studies on adaptation theory abroad
adaptation theory was first put forward by the linguist jef verschueren in 1987, and then he completed the theory in understanding pragmatics. in his opinion, the use of language is the process of adaptation, which is also the process of making choice. when language is used, it should adapt to different environments. since verschueren''s pragmatic theory studied language from a cognitive, social and cultural perspective, which, would undoubtedly be useful for guiding translation studies, it was quickly used for translation analysis.
