theprosperityofchineseeconomyhastriggeredgreatattentiontowardschina,followedbygrowinginterestinchineseliteraryworks.inrecentyears,anincreasingnumberoflocalworkshasbeentranslatedintoenglishyetamongwhichonlyfewhasreceivedwidepopularityexceptredsorghumbymoyanorthe2015hugoawardwinnerthethree-bodyproblembycixinliu.astrongeconomymerelycannotunderpinastrongcountrywithoutexpandingculturalinfluence.basedonthefive-thousandhistoryandculture,modernliteratureinchinacontinuetoprosperinthe21stcenturywhenabrandnewlookshouldbedisplayedonthenewcenturialstage.thusthetranslationofchineseliteraryworksshouldbetakenpriorityinordertoadvancethedevelopmentofmodernculturalcareer.giventhatlanguageistheprimaryandcoreconcernintranslation,thispaperwillprobeintotheproblemsontheleveloflanguageduringchinese-to-englishtranslation.
theresearchwillbeconductedbasedontheenglisheditionofthethree-bodyproblembycixinliu,thehugoawardwinnerin2015.asaninternationallywell-acceptedliterarymasterpiece,thechinese-americantranslatorkenliudeservestobepraisedandappreciated.likethetranslatorhowardgoldblattofmoyan,kenliualsoexcelsintwolanguagesandcultures,whichisimportantinlanguage-basedtranslation.theirsuccessintranslationalsogivestranslationworkershelpfulenlightenmentthatasolidmasteryoftwolanguagesandculturesisessentialtoasmoothtranslatedwork.however,onlyfewworkersnowadaysdevotetothepromotionofchineseworksandmosttranslatorsarenotnatives,lackingprofoundculturalandlinguisticbasis.asaresult,manyoutstandingchineseliteraryworksaremissedbyforeignreadersandthatconsequentlypreventfromtheinternationalizationofbrilliantchineseculture.fortunatelythegreatsuccessoftheenglisheditionofthethree-bodyproblemprovidesaexcellentopportunitytostudythesecretsandcharmoflanguagesintranslationandhopefullycandrawseveralexperienceasguidance.thethree-bodyproblem,accordingtothecommentsofoverseareaders,readsunbelievablywellinenglishandflowsassmoothlyasreaderswouldimaginetheoriginalworld.throughthecomparativeanalysisbetweenthechineseeditionandtheenglishone,thispaperwilldealwithhowatranslatedworkcanbesmoothasifwrittenbynativewriters.
therearesomestudiesonthisbookhasbeenperformed,suchas中国科幻小说英译研究——以《三体》为例(2015)writtenbylinqianliand论《三体》英译本中的女性主义翻译策略(2015)writtenbylangjing,butbothofthemdiscusslittleaboutthebasicelementsintranslation,namely,thelanguage.thispaper,therefore,focusesonthebook’shighlightswhendealingwithlanguagebarriersandconcludeaccordingtranslationstrategyandskillsfromtheperspectiveofdifferencesinthinkingmodesbetweenchineseandenglish.throughthisway,theshortcomingsinchinese-to-englishtranslationcanbefoundoutandreferencecanbeaccumulatedforitsfurtherdevelopment.
