2.1previous studies on dreiser and sister carrie

dreiser has been studied by lots of critics from different perspectives. although dreiser's time has been over for many years, up to now his works are still influencing the whole world. there are some foreign literature reviews on dreiser and sister carrie. robert keeble observed that in this novel dreiser manipulates his triangles to vary his characters romantic involvements, he also employs changes of locale to alter their physical environments.(8) robert keeble also cited that dreiser modifies conditions to govern his characters motives and tension, to highlight the contrasts of their situations.(60) helen ouliaei nia,fatemeh torki baghbaderani, dreiser minutely portrayed the lives of the poor in society because he had experienced poverty both as a child and an adult and he could also depict the lives of the rich as he was a journalist who was in everyday contact with the facts of such peoples life. (123) in one of his novels, sister carrie, dreiser, impersonally, represents the struggles of a poor girl who finds her way up the social scale.(200) huangyingyu, carrie is always dreaming while the rocking chair is rocking again and again, this is the deep impression on us after we read sister carrie which is the first novel of theodore dreiser. (50) in this novel the protagonist sister carrie is a controversial person. this paper tries to analyze the character of sister carrie in order to find out why what she has finally achieved is just extreme void and unhappiness, and shed light on how the author calls warmly for human intuitive knowledge, attacks vigorously the society of money omnipotent, and further more exposes bourgeois societys darkness.(80)

2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案

methods and procedures of the study

in the hope of figuring out what exactly are shown in sister carrie, first i have read its english version. in this way, a shorter period of time is needed for getting familiar with the content of the novel and those characters. then, a more visualized method is utilized- watching the adopted movie for several times. in the first time, the main objective is to enhance my memories of the plots with the help of dynamic images on the screen and vivid sounds. in the next few times, some lines i think i can refer to when writing my thesis are taken down. meanwhile, the original work is pored over as well. all the sentences, worth elaborating on, are clearly marked.

another modernized tool- internet also does me a great favor, providing me with abundant background information. without doubt, traditional libraries and e-libraries are indispensable too. a large number of journals, magazines, books and dissertations in the libraries are at my disposal. i can either integrate similar viewpoints over the tragedy of women in this book, or make a comparison between two opposing viewpoints, aiming at backing up my opinions. the last but not the least, my supervisor helps me a lot with this thesis. she constantly gives some grammatical suggestions. sometimes discussions are held either in person or on the phone so as to ensure the analysis reasonable. reading books, taking notes, turning to the internet and the libraries, and discussing with my supervisor are the main methods of this study.

the thesis consists of three parts. the first part will primarily provide the background information, including a general introduction of theodore dreiser, the book sister carrie, literature review and the purpose of the study. the second part is the focus of the thesis. in this part, the study will make analysis in three parts- economic, cultural and emotional. at last, the thesis will draw a conclusion about theodore dreisers views about womens tragedy.
