Literature reviewGuo Min publishes the article A Mere Nobodys Character Tragedy in Death of a Salesman in which she conducts the study of the heros character in detail. In this paper, she thinks there is no doubt that American Dream is correct. But Willy Lomans dream is a dream of those who are eager to achieve success. Owing to his personality, Willy Loman always persists in a belief that as long as one is well-liked, he will be successful. He keeps a rigid attitude to his own understanding of American Dream, which made him become isolated from the outside world. He lives in a net woven by him. Finally, his self-destruction is inevitable. (Guo, 2008)In the thesis namedAnalysis of The Image of The Protagonist in Death of A Salesman, Li Shicun analyzes the image of the hero. In his paper, he believes that Willy Loman was indulged in the myth of American Dream success, and he could not be content with plain life. He was also reluctant to admit his failure to anyone. Even if he realized he could not succeed, he still put his hope on his sons. He set a goal beyond his ability. Apparently, he worked hard for his dream but he was buried by his dream. He would rather die than face the reality. To commit suicide was the only way out for him. In this sense, his life was doomed to be a tragedy. (Li, 2008)Zhang Xian he publishes the article named The Comparison of Death of A Salesman with Traditional Tragedy, in which he explores the differences. He thinks Death of A Salesman challenges the concept of traditional tragedy, which believes that the hero should always be a noble or a great person. On the contrast, the hero in Death of A Salesman is just a plain ordinary guy, whose dream is exposed to the ridicule of the ruthless reality. (Zhang, 2001)

1.Research TopicThis paper will analyze specific demonstrations of Willy Lomans tragedy including the failure of his career, family and Willy Lomans being lost in between reality and dream, the present and the past as well as life and death to dig out the reasons of his tragedy. The major reasons include his wrong interpretation of American Dream and the stimulation of the social situation, as well as his own personalities contributing to the tragedy, such as stubbornness, self-deception and vanity. To a certain extent, his tragedy is not an occasional but an inevitable outcome.This paper will also analyze the tragic fate of the protagonist through the demonstrations of his tragedy and the causes of the tragedy to help the readers have insight into the hero Willy Lomans tragedy and understand Arthur Millers tragedies better. 2.Research MethodsMajor research methods will include document research and sampling of original materials. On the basis of mastering the materials, combine the research findings and make further study. A document research is the process of reading, analyzing, evaluating, and summarizing scholarly materials about a specific work. I have looked up in many libraries some background information. In the meantime, the academic database and online materials are used as the references of the study.In order to be familiar with the novel, I have read both the English and the Chinese editions. While reading for the second time, I underline some important plots and mark out the words that frequently appear, which can obviously reflect the characteristics of the protagonist Willy Loman. Thus, when I start to write this thesis, I can get a lot of examples and details from the notes. The abundant materials on the internet and journals or books in the library also contribute a great deal.
