ha jin, a chinese american author and winner of several awards of writing. growing up and finishing his higher education in china, ha jin went to the united states in 1986. he has already been in the main stream of writers in america. as a huge stain on the history of human civilization, the rape of nanjing is not just an accidental deviation of modern civilization or "damage", but civilization itself hidden inside a special product, reflects the ideals of humanity for their own enlightenment and deconstruction. ha jins novel "nanjing requiem" reconstruct the memory of humanity in this disaster, and question the huge potential crisis that hidden in the modern civilization.

hong zhigang described that the rape of nanjing is not just a nation of disaster, but also a human catastrophe. it touches the issue of the necessary enlightenment of human but not the hatred between nations. he considered that suffering and salvation is the central theme of "nanjing requiem". in addition to the japanese, all the others including weitling, rabe, searle, wilson, john magee, anling and doctor chu are the victims of this massacre. a large number of victims lost their lives, but only these survivors act as the savior and withstand the torment of the disaster. in his research hong argued that weitling the main character in this novel represented the great good of humanity but the japanese are on the contrary, they are like two parallel lines through the whole novel, almost every detail have some representation, which are hidden behind a huge disaster, showing the japanese madness of humanity.

2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案

methode and procedures of the study

in the hope of figuring out what exactly are shown in nanjing requiem, first i have read its english version. in this way, a shorter period of time is needed for getting familiar with the content of the novel and those characters. then, a more visualized method is utilized, watching the interrelated movie for several times. in the first time, the main objective is to enhance my memories of the plots with the help of the images on the screen and vivid sounds. in the next few times, some lines i think i can refer to when writing my thesis are taken down. meanwhile, the original work is pored over as well. all the sentences, worth elaborating on, are clearly marked. as matchmaking is very popular nowadays, much attention has been paid to daily news reports in case that any up-to-date materials may be missed.

another modernized tool internet also does me a great favor, providing me with abundant background information. without doubt, traditional libraries and e-libraries are indispensable too. a large number of journals, magazines, books and dissertations in the libraries are at my disposal. i can either integrate similar viewpoints of the demoralization of groups behaviors or make a comparison between different viewpoints, aiming at backing up my opinions. the last but not the least, my supervisor helps me a lot with this thesis. she constantly gives some grammatical suggestions. sometimes discussions are held either in person or on the phone so as to ensure the analysis reasonable. reading books, taking notes, turning to the internet and the libraries, and discussing with my supervisor are the main methods of this study.

the thesis consists of three parts. the first part will primarily provide the background information, including a general introduction of ha jin (his personal experiences, literary reputation and masterpieces), the book nanjing requiem, literature review and the purpose of the study. the second part is the focus of the thesis. in this part, the study will make analysis about the main reasons of the demoralization of groups behavior during that period of china. at last, the thesis will draw a conclusion about the demoralization of groups behaviors that shows in this novel.
