postmodernism is a kind of cultural ideological trend with far-reaching influence and diversified value orientation in the west after the second world war. the influence of postmodernism extends to literature, architectural philosophy, religion, art and other aspects. as a complex way of thinking,postmodernismhas resisted and transcended modernity. it emphasizes the disintegration of the subject, the elimination of the dual mode of thinking, respect for differences and emphasis on equality. postmodernism has a profound influence and inspiration on the novel. the characteristics of postmodernist novels are different from those of the previous ones. postmodernist writers refuse the noble literary expression of modern writers and try to break the traditional literary classification and seek reconciliation. for example, many postmodern novels are often written in various forms: such as detective novels, science fiction, romantic novels, spy novels, etc. these postmodern novels are often strange, and history tends to evolve in a distorted and more readable way. fowles is the founder representative of the british postmodern novel, which enjoys a great reputation in english literature and even on the world stage. the french lieutenant's woman is a very representative work. john fowles began to producethe french lieutenant’s womanin 1967, and published the work two years later. john fowles was also awarded the nobel prize for literature in 1999. the french lieutenant’s womanis also considered one of the best literary works in the 21st century.
