research purpose

this paper aims to analyze the causes of emily's tragedy in the novelarose for emilythrough the theory of abnormal psychology.the novel wasfinishedby william faulkner, a world-renowned modern american novelist.based on the southern society after the civil war, the novel tells the tragic story of emily. it is impressive that, as a noble lady in the south, emily killed her lover and slept with his body for decades. this behavior, whether in the past or today, is incomprehensible and abnormal, and can even be judged as psychosis. in recent years, many scholars have explored the novel from different aspects or perspectives to understand the author's intention, such as gothic style, symbolism, character analysis, feminism, etc. however, i personally believe that this abnormal behavior is inseparable from the distortion of character. studying the causes of emily's distorted personality from the perspective of abnormal psychology may be more helpful to understand the theme and characters of the novel, as well as the writing intention of the writers born in the south of america.
