research purpose：

tess of the d’urbervilles, one of therepresentative british tragedies of the victorian era, is well-known for itstragic plot and characters. many scholars tend to focus on the cause of tess’s tragic life from the perspectives of thepersonality of the characters and the social background. yet the setting,storyline and the personages’ behavior,to some extent, are only the externalization of thomas hardy’s tragic concept that hides beneath and contributesto the tragedy. it runs through the whole novel, tightly connects dramaticconflicts together, and creates the tragic atmosphere. therefore，this essay tries to dig out the tragic vision and tragic atmospherecontained in this world-famous novel with the help of nietzsche’s tragedy aesthetics: apollonian spirit anddionysian spirit illustrated in the birthof tragedy.
