1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

being considered as the subordinates of theirmale counterpart, women have long been oppressed both mentally and physically inpatriarchy society. however, the consciousness of women begins to awaken withthe development and influence of feminist movements. trifles (1916) by susan glaspell and woman hollering creek (1991) by sandra cisneros, two of the mostinfluential and significant works from feminist perspective, describeawakenings of the heroines out of mental oppression and physical abuse toliberate themselves.

research on both “trifles” and “woman holleringcreek” paid close attention to gender studies and feminism while both had alittle research on the women awakenings from feminist perspective.

so far, there are plenty existing studiesrelated to “trifles” with enhancedrecognition of feminist movements. as a result, most of the research focused ongender issues. for example, trifles: thepath to sisterhood by phyllis mael talked about the cooperation betweenwomen under gender discriminations in 1989; xu liying discussed the genderdifferences in language use, thinking pattern and moral judgment in 2006; the binary oppositions in trifles (2014)by yang yan chose the approach of duality in gender; in gender differences in glaspell’s trifles.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

Along with the prosperity of the feministmovements, women have achieved significant accomplishments in all aspects oflife including gaining their legitimate franchise and writing their own literature. Withinthose great female writers, Susan Glaspell and Sandra Cisneros arerepresentatives in their ages while they coincidently wrote about awakenings ofthe female protagonists in their respective works, namely Trifles and Woman HolleringCreek.

Based on these two works, this thesis is tomake rounded analysis on the causes and processes of the female protagonists’awakenings of their self-consciousness with close study of external situationsof social traditions and male-oriented cultures rather than simply point outthe changes of female characters’ psychology. In general, the thesis will bedivided into five parts: the first part is the introduction to both works withregards to their background information and subject matters along withliterature reviews; next, from the second part to the fourth part, there wouldbe three stages of the mental phases of the female protagonists, graduallychanging from “Lost” to “Omen” and finally to “Awakening”; last, the fifth partis conclusion. The paper perceives the feminist movement through the analysisof these two works to appreciate the accomplishments achieved and to setexamples for future works.
