Those scholars choose different themes to research and analyze. Some of them concentrate on Flannery O#8217;Connor#8217;s writing skills. And some of them pay their attention to analyzing the protagonists in the short stories. However most of them only pay their attention to the grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find or the Joy in Good Country People. Because of this thesis, the present author will not only expound the personality traits of the grandma and July but also the mother of two children and Mrs. Freeman. Also the present author will illustrate the probable reasons and the roots of tragedies of the protagonists.}

the thesis will be divided into four parts. the thesis will begin with the introduction and the structure of the thesis. in the second part, it will be the brief introduction of a good man is hard to find and good country people and the author-flannery o#8217;conner. then in the third part, an analysis of protagonists will be the major part of my thesis. in this part the present author will analyze a good man is hard to find and good country people mainly from the characteristics of the grandmother and the misfit in a good man is hard to find and the joy and mrs. freeman in good country people and the possible reasons for the tragedy. finally there will be a conclusion firmly based on my thesis.

the short stories of flannery o#8217;connor have aroused plentiful comments by numerous famous scholars and researchers. flannery o#8217;connor#8217;s works are noted for her writing skill which is horrific and bloodcurdling. for instance, the writer t.s.eliot said that when he read flannery o#8217;connor#8217;s works, he was scared. and he thought that flannery o#8217;connor had a gift in writing and her works were outstanding. elizabeth bishop, an american famous poet, held the opinion that flannery o#8217;connor#8217;s works would be kept in the american literature forever. and she said that though flannery o#8217;connor#8217;s work would not stretch to a large range, they are direct and vivid. the deep and unique insights let flannery o#8217;connor#8217;s works more poetic. it is better than ten poems together. another american famous poet thomas merton held the view that flannery o#8217;connor made efforts to expose the corrupt and dishonored feature of the human beings. many of the researchers and scholars analyzed the short stories of flannery o#8217;connor from viewpoints of religions, irony, original sin, the personal experiences and so on.

some scholars analyze the short stories of flannery o#8217;connor from her writing skill which is irony. irony can let a work more significative. irony can also make readers understand the deeper meaning of the writer. for example, in a good man is hard to find, the grandmother tries to avoid the tragedy but what measures she takes causes this tragedy.
