1. 研究目的与意义
In these days of rapid improvement in living standard and compulsory education, more and more people are making great efforts to enhance their capacities, especially those from countryside or with poor backgrounds. As an important and necessary element of growth, social environment has great influence on the development of a person#8217;s character and his awareness of reality. Nowadays, people may be misguided by the temptations in such a fast-paced world. Pip#8217;s psychological conversions in Great Expectations is meaningful to enlighten people especially youngsters to chase their dreams without losing themselves.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
My paper will focus on the psychological conversions of Pip and try to figure out the relationship between social circumstances and natural humanity. This paper is composed of four parts. The first part will give a brief introduction to Pip#8217;s psychological conversions. Then, the thesis will explore the reasons for these conversions. The third part will discuss the formation of Pip#8217;s natural humanity with surrounding people and social circumstances. At last, this paper will try to conclude that people should struggle to achieve their dreams without complaining about poor birth background or social circles because personality also plays an important role in determining one#8217;s future.
3. 国内外研究现状
great expectations has attracted a large number of scholars since it was published for the first time. researchers#8217; opinions are divided in several aspects. for instance, hana wirth-nesher compared pip in great expectations with huck in adventures of huckleberry finn and revealed the similarities and differences between the two orphans. having been translated into chinese, great expectations aroused a certain number of scholars#8217; attention. for example, liu limin analyzed the theme of growth in great expectations in 《成长中的逐渐成熟与自我发现》.
it has been a hot topic that whether social environment and family background can determine one#8217;s future and destiny. with the integration of countryside and city, many people, especially the young from ordinary family will feel confused if they cannot realize their dreams after making efforts to struggle for a long time while others from rich family can achieve successes easily with the help of their parents. pip#8217;s psychological conversions in great expectations reflect the influence of environment on one#8217;s development. i attempt to make a research on this topic to encourage young people to keep their nature and not to cease struggling.

i. introduction
during the process of capitalization in the 19th century, the society exposed itself to a lot of social problems including the discrepancy among different classes. at the same time, a new literature genre called critical realism emerged which revealed the miserable reality of the society and criticize the capital accumulation of some capitalists and manufacturers. charles dickens was one of those great novelists who revealed the dark side of the capital world in the 19th century. in his work great expectations, he expressed his sympathy for the lower-class people and disclosed the society in different aspects. the main character, pip in the novel goes through several conversions during his lifetime, which reflects the influence of social environment on a person#8217;s growth.
