this paper aims to analyze the main female character norma jean’s awakening process of female subjectivity consciousness that is provoked and intensified by shifting gender roles of the individual andthe second-wave american feminist movement from twoaspects including life consciousness and gender consciousness. and since change often causes uncertainty and instability, another aspect is norma jean’sperplexity in the search of self-identity. besides, this paper taking norma jean as example, tends to further explore the concept of “downhome feminists” put forward by g．o．morphew.
