1. 研究目的与意义、国内外研究现状(文献综述)
The area of concern of this project is to discuss about the contribution of Chinese companies to the development of Equatorial Guinea in infrastructural level, social level as well as political level. The paper will discuss how Chinese companies have transformed Equatorial Guineas infrastructures (roads, social houses, electricity etc) in a way that was never before, the impact that those infrastructures development bring to the local common people, and the returns gained by Chinese companies from those huge investments The main goal of this paper will be to discuss many of the challenges and opportunities faced by Chinese companies operating in Equatorial Guinea and also provide some possible measures to reduce those challenges. Many papers have been written about this topic or related topic with those closer to my topic being Esteban, Mario. "The Chinese amigo: implications for the development of Equatorial Guinea." The China Quarterly 199 (2009)And中国公司在非洲建筑市场的发展: 赤道几内亚案例." 价值工程 32.7 (2013) written by龚财君. These two authors discuss the situation of Chinese companies in Equatorial Guinea, the reasons for their success, the challenges faced which includes the intense competition with the western companies and their relationship with the EG government and how this affect Chinese companies from fully progressing in the EG market despite having demonstrated their potential and skills in the projects they operate and how they have transformed EG infrastructures in a very short time period, unlike the west which are only hungry for the oil, they only explore the countrys resources and leave nothing behind for the local people (Deborah,2009).
2. 研究的基本内容和问题
Three main reasons inspired me to write about this particular topic; one is because this area of concern is very significant and extremely beneficial both for China and Equatorial Guinea in a way that by stating out issues that retard both sides progress, and providing the necessary measures to tackle them, both countries will be able to move forward without any major discrepancies or misunderstandings which will in turn lead to future smooth cooperation, the second one is because I have read many articles closely related to this topic but some of them fail to mention prominent issues that affect both sides, issues like the need for EG to set up industries in its territories, train national labor force, reduce corruption scandals and strengthen more security in the country are very necessary for EG to attract more foreign investment in general and Chinese companies in particular and secure the already installed ones. Likewise, Chinese Business people should learn how to appropriately use the term guangxi 关系and be able to apply it in the correct way in order not to risk losing a very important project, trust and good relationship with the local government officials, so also the term fake kindness 假客气, respect local laws, specially labor laws which require foreign companies to recruit at least 70% of local labor force (Ministry of labor of Equatorial Guinea,2002), build long lasting, durable project in order to gain more trust from the local government and compete perfectly with other Western companies etc; and the last reason is to let Chinese Businessmen uncover the abundance of opportunities and market gains which EG holds due to the enormous amount of her natural resources such as oil, timber, Agriculture, the fishing Industry etc, whose factors are very little or unknown to Chinese business people. The reasons for the country to remain unknown to many maybe because; EG is the only Spanish speaking country in Africa, for that reason many people may find less interest in investing there instead they prefer to look for market opportunities in Africas French or English-speaking countries, the other reason might be because of the countrys small geographical area and little population, but opportunities reside there and in huge amounts and many western companies, mostly Americans and French companies have been taking advantage of those opportunities, its time for the Chinese business people to also seek for their own fair share and take advantage of those opportunities because of the excellent relationship EG maintains with China and the EG government recently gives more preferences to Chinese companies than the western ones.
3. 研究的方法与方案
Methodology and procedure Since the primordial aim of this paper is to research about the overall situation of Chinese companies in Equatorial Guinea looking at opportunities gained and the challenges faced, as well as providing solutions to those challenges and suggest on the future improvements for future good cooperation, the essential methods suitable for gathering the necessary data, analyzing them and interpret the results as well as put them into use where necessary is as follows:1. A questionnaire will be created and sent to the top three companies involved with the aim of collecting the required data for analysis. 2. A face to-face interview will be conducted with two of the three companies involved in this project because of their ease of access, the other cannot be personally accessed because of the distance from us, we can only send them a questionnaire through the email or make a phone interview by which we intend to use someone very close to the company in EG, and that person will be my uncle, who is a close friend of the general manager of the company in EG.3. Data from other literature reviews will be used where necessary, with references4. Other sources of data will come from internet websites such as the website of the ministry of commerce of The People Republic Of China, the website of the ministry of public work of Equatorial Guinea (Ministerio de obras publicas he infraestructuras) and the websites of both embassies5. In case the information obtained from the websites of both embassies is inaccurate or outdated,a direct phone interview will be conducted with both embassies using people very close to them, who have already agreed to cooperate6. The three companies involved are; Yellow River Engineering Consulting Co.,Ltd. 黄河勘测规划设计有限公司(YREC) involved in the electrification of the largest city of Equatorial Guinea and its peripheries China Dalian (大连国际合作集团股份有限公司) Responsible for the macro projects of social houses and roads in Equatorial Guinea Ganliang International (江西赣粮企业有限公司) recently got the projects for the construction of Agricultural farmlands across Equatorial GuineaType of required data1. Because we want to evaluate the progress of the three companies in EG market, we will require certain projects from the last five years and the cost of those projects, after which a pie chat or a line column will be used to analyze the data through excel and the corresponding results will be interpreted and used accordingly A rough example showing the three companies in five years period and their respective projects gained from the EG Government ( figures shown in millions of dollars)Note: The above chat is just an illustration of how the data obtained from the companies willbe analyzed; none of the above shown data is real2. Similar data will be required from the Ministry of commerce of China, which will be used to analyze the trade balance between the two countries in the last five years, the figures can easily be obtained through their website3. The main productsimported and exported from both countries will also be obtained from the website of the ministry of Commerce of China4. Pictures illustrating some of the projects carried out by the three targeted companies will be needed for illustrations5. The number of companies presently installed in EG as well as the total number of Chinese labor force in EG will be required from the Embassy of China in Malabo (Equatorial Guinea)6. Data related to the role of corporate social responsibilities by Chinese Multinational corporations will be needed from the respective companies through interview and/ or questionnaires7. Both the reference articles, books, newspapers, enterprises, personal interviews and the internet will be needed to obtain other related data such as the relationship between the company and the government, the role of China in Africa and how it benefits the local people, opinion of local people towards the presence of Chinese in EG, recent achievements and future perspectives about the relationship between China and EG in general and Chinese enterprises and the local Government in particular etc. Because of the good relationship which we keep with the three companies above, the required data is guaranteed to be provided by them. Assistance will also be needed from the personnel of the companies mentioned above to obtain the data from the Chinese embassy in Malabo because of the excellent relationship those companies maintain with the Chinese Embassy in Malabo. Contacts have already been established with the companies involved for this purpose. Some of the data is already in my possession such as the literature review and the trade balance between China and Equatorial Guinea from the second quarter of 2014, so is also the types of products imported and exported from both countries. While a plan have been set to carry out my internship in one of the above mentioned companies located in Zhengzhou, Henan province, from there I will easily obtain the remaining data with the companys help and support.Work planMy thesis plan is as followsDate Event Planned scheduleJan 20 toMarch 6 Mid-term examination Plan to design and carry out the investigation process, collect and rearrange the data collected, as well as analyze those data, write the investigation report and submit it online with the approval of my mentorMarch 8 to April 16 Thesis writing With all the data in hand, action will be taken in writing the relevant thesis and submit it online with the approval of my mentorFinal paper April 17 to April 30 Within this period, detected mistakes from the thesis will be corrected and the final paper will be submitted online with the approval of my mentorThesis defense May 1 to May 13 Having received the notice from my department, the thesis will be ready for defense according to the departments programFinal Manuscript May 14 to May 20 Upon the various experts suggestions and opinions during thesis defense, the suggestions will be considered and final mistakes corrected and the final manuscript will then be submitted online with the approval of my mentorThesis topicsThis thesis will include four main topics and the last topic which is the fifth one will be the concluding topic, the thesis will be as follow: Chapter one will discuss the overall situation of Chinese companies in Africa Chapter two will talk about the current situation of Chinese companies in Equatorial Guinea Chapter three will explore the opportunities Chinese companies derive from the EG market Chapter four will examine the challenges faced while operating in EG market Chapter five will conclude the whole situation, as well as provide suggestions and advice
4. 研究创新点
We will discuss in details the meaning, use and restrictions of the Chinese Guangxi and Jia keqi and their implications when doing business and dealing with the people of EG in order to avoid losing a very much expected and beneficial project and relationship from the local authorities. We will discuss the big problem of language barriers, how Chinese translators dissatisfy local authorities by providing documents translated into Spanish but with too many grammar errors and spelling mistakes to them. We will provide solutions and suggestions to the mentioned problems as well. Some local Government labor laws will also be added into this paper so as to help Chinese companies to better understand and deal with the local Government laws and better understand the local society and its issues. The problem of industrialization of EG will be discussed in details, the EG PEGI 2020 horizon program which is aimed at making EG an emerging country by the year 2020 and how Chinese companies can contribute to the realization of this program. Unlike other articles, this one will try to explore the main reasons why the people of EG practice corruption, the negative effect of corruption to the local economy and the bad reputation that this brings to the international world and how this restricts foreign direct investment in EG. For the labor force problem, we will try to find a strategy on how the local Government and the Chinese companies can combine forces to train high skilled, productive local labor personnel for the benefit of both sides. Finally we will discuss on how EG can follow Chinas successful steps for its own development
