Solomon Northup''s Twelve Years A Slave has had a profound impact on the development of people#8217;s thoughts of liberalism.Twelve Years A Slave is written by Solomon Northup as a memoir of being abducted to the south to be a slave. The only thing he never gave up was the desire for freedom. The background of the story was placed on the macro background of the eve of the Civil War, and it has accomplished the mission of honking the times. Although the era is far away from us, the connotation and value of 'running for freedom' have always been praised by people. The meaning of memorizing the history for the moment is not only a lesson from history, but it warns the world that 'everyone is born equal'. It is also a journey of spiritual salvation for those who have long been bound by all kinds of material things.

My paper will give a brief introduction the spirit of liberalism in Twelve Years A Slave through analysis of the history, characters in the work and plots. Also, the current situation of the spirit of liberalism comparing with that in Twelve Years A Slave will also be studied.

There have been few researches on the film with the same name and researches on the book is even fewer. The existing researches mainly study the history of American black slaves and there are few researches on the angle of the spirit of liberalism. That is why the author attempts to research on this topic.
