The Sound and the Fury is Faulkner’s first mature work, and it is also his most dedicated and favorite work. Because of its unique writing style and profound implication, this work has attracted the attention of critics since it was published in 1929. Among all kinds of reviews, most of them focus on“the decline of the Southern family”, “the tragic fate of Southern women”, “the reflection of the decline of the South on the living conditions of human beings in the 20th century” and “Faulkner’s time view”, but few of them focus on the interpretation of the novel from the perspective of marriage ethics.

Ethics is a common cultural issue of all human beings. As an integral part, the importance of marriage ethics is self-evident. The background of this novel is the time when the Southern plantation economy declined after the American Civil War. Therefore,using the Structural-functionalism Theory to analyze the relationship between Mr. Compson and his wife , this paper analyzes the real reasons for the decline of the family, reveals Faulkner''s views on the marriage ethics and the importance of establishing the correct marriage ethics for the family and children’s character cultivation.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

From the point of view of marriage ethics, through finding out the indifference of the relationship between Mr. Compson and his wife and the tragedy of their children caused by their performance, it is concluded that the confusion of the marriage ethics of Mr. Compson and his wife is the internal cause of the disintegration of the whole family.

The paper focuses on the marriage ethics. It is divided into four parts. Chapter one is mainly about the author William Faulkner and his work The Sound and the Fury. Chapter two is a brief introduction of marriage ethics and Structural-functionalism Theory . Chapter three is the major part of the paper. It analyzes the concrete manifestation of the indifference of the relationship between Mr. Compson and his wife and the negative influence of the imbalance of marriage ethics on their children by using Structural-functionalism Theory, so as to summarize the marriage ethics expressed by William Faulkner in this work and the importance of correct marriage ethics for all family. Chapter four makes a summary of the paper and shows the hope that every family can build the correct marriage ethics.

william faulkner is one of the most influential writers in the american literature. his literary works have been introduced to china since 1930s. as soon as his works were introduced, they aroused the interest and research of many literary lovers. up to now, a large number of articles, reviews and monographs on faulkner have also been published. last century’s research mainly focused on the writer’s creation background, the characters in the works, racism, writing technique, the south, religion, etc. in recent years, scholars have tried to analyze faulkner’ s works through some new critical aspects, such as post-colonialism, new criticism, eco-criticism, feminism and so on.

some reviews at home have also involved the marriage ethnics in faulkner’s works. xiao[肖明翰](1997)in his work the study of william faulkner expresses his ideas that for the decline of the compson family, his father mr. compson plays a special role. it is he who passes on the traditions of his family and the old south to his four children. at the same time, he destroys the traditional values with his own nihilism and cynicism, so that the children could not get rid of the traditional control, and could not use the old values to help themselves in real life as well. xiao also points out mrs. compson’s failure as a mother. she is a cold, hypocritical, selfish woman who never stops lamenting and complaining, and has no consideration, care and love for her husband and children. zhang[张礼牡](2010)holds the idea that it is this kind of indifferent and abnormal relationship between husband and wife that leads to a series of tragedies of family and children. wang’s[王琴](2018)point of view is basically the same as zhang’s. she believes that the family with unbalanced paternal love and lack of maternal love has a negative impact on the healthy development of children.

through the above analysis, it can be found that the domestic research mainly focuses on the family relationship itself, while few people analyze the marriage ethics from the perspective of sociology.
