research purpose:

as we know, the eastern culture pictures asa huge difference from the western, no matter in the lifestyle, the history, oreven the personalities generally. in the early days, however, writers hadrecorded some typical distinctions between the orient and occident. it seemedthat asia was either a paradise or a hell for the western, full of treasure andslaves. there were many explorers travelling and witnessing how it was in the asiansoil. these people had drawn attention to the demonstration of the connectionbetween the east and the west in literature, art, and other types of culturalproductions. there is no doubt that most of the conclusions were deeply imbuedwith the biases, assumptions and inclinations to the western values, includingthose of gender, race, royalty and class. in this paper, it is necessary tounderstand what and how did the west think about the east in the 20th centuryfrom a certain limited point of view: the healing power from the east, which isbased on the analysis and admiration of somersetmaugham's works, the narrow corner, the painted veil and on a chinesescreen.
