asthe second female prime minister in british history after margaret thatcher,theresa may has also been dubbed the "iron lady", and even said inher report to the queen that she would like to stay in office for 11 years likemargaret thatcher. unfortunately, theresa may delivered her resignation speechoutside 10 downing street in london on may 24, 2019, after the brexit planfailed to make progress as planned. at the end of her speech, theresa maychoked up. in 1985, in the same place, margaret thatcher, the first female primeminister in british history to win three consecutive terms, and the longestserving british prime minister since the 20th century, delivered resignationspeech.
as the only two female prime ministers in british history,the timing of their resignation speeches varied widely, and even the publicreaction to their resignation speeches varied widely.their resignation speechis the end of their political career, but due to the different rhetoricalstrategies they use in their resignation speeches, different speech effects areproduced.this paper will compare and analyze their resignationspeeches from historical background, three elements of aristotle's speech,rhetoric of political speech, pragmatic effect and so on,so as to showdifferent rhetorical strategies under different effects.
as political speech plays an important role in political life. asearly as ancient greece, speech has become a powerful political weapon. inspeech, "rhetoric is a resource of political power" (herrick,2013:17).rhetoric is what aristotle first proposed. aristotle defined rhetoricas a comprehensive discipline centered on persuasiveness and encompassingcommunication skills such as audience analysis, thought organization, and textlayout. the three elements of rhetoric are logos appeals, pathos appeals, andethos appeals.a great deal of research has been done on the role of politicalrhetoric in political speech at home and abroad.for example, atabroad, jones and peccei (2004) stated that rhetorical devices containmetaphor, euphemism, the rule of three, parallelism, and pronoun. zulvy aliviahanim(2018) wrote an article aims to investigate the useof rhetorical devices and how itapplied in the political speech. groenendijk, j.and joost. a. d. (2017) used political rhetoric to analyze trump's speeches.
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
Basedon Aristotle's speech theory, this paper makes a comparative analysis ofTheresa May and Margaret Thatcher's resignation speeches from the perspectivesof linguistic rhetoric, verbal rhetoric and pragmatic effect. The rhetoric oflanguage mainly includes syntactic rhetoric, discourse rhetoric, lexicalrhetoric, and pronunciation and intonation rhetoric. Through the text analysisof the rhetoric types, quantity, the frequency of modal verbs and modal wordsin the two speeches, a table will be created for comparison with these data.
This paper is divided into five parts. Thefirst part mainly introduces the different historical backgrounds of TheresaMay and Margaret Thatcher, and then puts forward the purpose and significanceof the research.The secondpart is a literature review, which firstly introducesthe definition of Aristotle's rhetoric, then reviews the domestic and foreignstudies on the use of political rhetoric in speech, and finally makes a summaryof this chapter. The third part analyzes Theresa May's resignation speech fromthe perspective of linguistic rhetoric, speech rhetoric and pragmatic effect.The fourth part analyzes Thatcher's resignation speech from the three aspects.The fifth part is the conclusion , which uses data and tables to compare andanalyze Theresa May's and Margaret Thatcher's resignation speeches, and finds differentlanguage effects under different rhetorical strategies.
