research purpose:

as one of the greatest works of theodore dreiser, thenovel an american tragedy hasreceived much attention from critics since its publication. however,few scholars have given enough attention to the significant action—lying that has repeatedly appeared in almost everypart of the novel. under the guidance of the theoretical framework of lyingestablished by st. augustine, this paper emphasizes and analyses the scenes oflying in this novel. this paper aims to categorize lies, explain theirharmfulness, and discuss how these lies have helped the development of the plotas well as the characterization in this novel. through analyzing the novel,this paper attempts to emphasize that deception is rife in american society atthat time. furthermore, this paper argues that the prevalence of dishonesty isthe tragedy of america that dreiser has intended to present.
