Personal heroism, one of the most important social well-recognized values in the United States, is quite different from the core value in China. The core value in China, originated from Confucius and Mencius, emphasizes the firm masses basis of heroes, while in America, they believe heroes can save the world on their own. Therefore, through my research, I would like to carry out researches on personal heroism in order to learn more about the verbal and behavior differences influenced by different social values. Moreover, Shawshank Redemption is one of the most classic movies in America, in which American social phenomenon is reflected vividly, and it is also a movie widely known in China. In addition, there are plenty of verbal and behavior cases influenced by personal heroism. Therefore, Shawshank Redemption is an excellent starting point for me to analyze American personal heroism.

this paper will analyze american personal heroism reflected in the movie shawshank redemption in order to have a deep understanding of american social culture. firstly, this paper will introduce briefly the definition of american personal heroism and the movie shawshank redemption. then, plots in the movie with american personal heroism feature will be analyzed in order to figure out the way that american personal heroism influences one#8217;s behavior and language.

there are numerous researches on american culture through the analysis of the movie shawshank redemption, and they can be divided into the following types.

the first one is to analyze the personal heroism and individualism in the movie. zhang jin and man xueqian carried out a research on personal heroism through the movie in the perspective of language and behavior (zhangamp;man, 2016, 131-132 13). moreover, he rongrong and wang jinjie analyzed individualism of the movie, and they carried out their research by introducing the definition of individualism and case analysis of individualism in the movie (heamp;wang, 2017, 163-164 16). compared with this, wu zhijie divided individualism into three different meanings, and explained them with cases in the movie.
