1. 研究目的与意义

Nameis the symbol of an individual, yet it is also a token of a specific culture.When it comes to international cooperation or academic communication,introducing each other by exchanging names would be the first step. Therefore,a proper translation on names is quite important. Names are mostly given basedon culture foundations and in terms of Chinese names which consisting of givennames and surnames, the cultural connotations would be much broader. To make areview on what achievements the previous researches have accomplished and givesuggestions on the translation of Chinese names, this topic was chosen.

thispaper focuses on the methods applied in translating chinese names into english.in aspects of daily communication and literary exchange, different skillsshould be utilized in the translation of chinese names.

3. 国内外研究现状

The government has somestandardized regulations on the C-E name translations using the method ofPinyin. However, this kind of provision should only be applied in dailycommunication, signatures on papers and so on. Due to the cultural disparitiesexisting between China and English-speaking countries, many cultural essenceswould be lost if Pinyin method is used for all the occasions. So, some studiespresented various ways of translating Chinese names into English ones. Forinstance, paraphrase and annotation. Right now, there are still numerousarguments relating to the theory of C-E name translations.

4. 计划与进度安排

This project is mostly theory-based. Thetopic is the result of author#8217;s critical thinking in years of English studying.This paper aims at doing a summary of the previous researches on C-E nametranslation and hopefully,it will come to a proper solution to the existingproblems in C-E name translation. Firstly, the paper will do a general reviewof the researches before and introduce the background of the concerningproject. Secondly, the features of Chinese names will be presented, amongwhich, the structure of Chinese names and methods used in giving names will beintroduced. Thirdly, the cultural connotations will be discussed in detail,including feminism, change of times, traditional costumes and religiousbeliefs. In the end, the author will give suggestions on how to translateChinese names into English ones.
