1. 研究目的与意义
Verbal humor is a common phenomenon in the communication of people, which makes a dialogue more lively and interesting, and brings people joy as well as lives atmosphere up. The verbal humor in situation comedies, such as Big Bang, Friends, and Growing Pains, makes sitcoms very popular with English lovers. People can not only have fun, but also know about western culture and pure English expression while watching a drama. But how does humor come into being in a drama? Since the late 90th century, researchers have begun to study verbal humor from the perspectives of linguistics, pragmatics, rhetoric and others. From the perspective of pragmatics, humor can be analyzed from Conversational Implicature Theory, Relevance Theory, Politeness Principle and Cooperative Principle. The thesis mainly analyzes the humor based on the sitcom-Good Luck Charlie, from the perspective of Cooperative Principle, a theory proposed by H. P. Grice. According to the theory, verbal humor can be produced by violating the Cooperative Principle and its four maxims. Through the brief analysis of humor in Good Luck Charlie, people can know more about Cooperative Principle and grasp the subtleties of English humor.

the cooperative principle was first presented by the american linguistic philosopher paul grice in his logic and conversation when he was making a speech in harvard university in 1967. it is the general principle of the conversational implicature. in his view, to converse with each other, the participants must first of all be willing to cooperate; otherwise, it would not be possible for them to carry on the talk. this general principle is called the cooperative principle, abbreviated as cp. after that, many linguists have continuously improved and put forward new theories on the basis of grice#8217;s theory. geoffrey n. leech, the british linguist, proposed the politeness principle (abbrev. pp) in his principle and pragmatics so as to make up the deficiency of the cp. the pp consists of six maxims; they are tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim. leech believed the main reason why people violate the cp is the consideration of politeness. while, penelope brown and stephen levinson supported the cp from the 'face' theory--describing the concept of communicative behavior, which had been proposed by erving goffman. later, on the basis of q- principle and r- principle, levinson put forward other three principles: q- principle, i- principle and m- principle. and yet, laurence r. horn pointed out that there are only two principles in pragmatics, and they can be classified into q- and r- principles which are derived from the maxim of quantity and the maxim of relation in cp. dan sperber and deirdre wilson put forward the famous relevance theory in their book--relevance: communication and cognition summarizing the cp. what#8217;s more, gaidar, atlas and levinson proposed the information principle, i.e., through the minimum limited information to achieve an effective communication.
