1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

with the continuous development of china, china hasreceived more and more attention. however, many foreigners still keep the pastview on china, and their understanding of china is one-sided. this paper aimsat discussing the six most representative ted talks about china to show thereshaping of china’s image and how this process happened. ted is a global setof conferences, under the slogan "ideas worth spreading". it hasbecome an important channel for foreigners to understand china. these six talksdiffers from many aspects, which reflect the transformation of foreigners’understanding of china’s image and in what way we want to reshape our image. inthis reshaping process, rhetorical modes used by chinese elites in theirspeeches have played a very important role.

rhetoric is the art of communication with an audienceand howto make article and speech more attractive. rhetorical modes are methods for effectivelycommunicating through language and writing. through the analysis of these sixtalks, this paper tries to find out the similarities and differences of therhetorical modes used by the speakers, and summarizes the patterns, which willhelp the later speakers to reshape china’s image with more attractive andpersuasive words, constantly improve our image, so that foreigners canunderstand the real china.

the study of rhetoric has a long history. two thousandyears ago, aristotle first put forward the concept of rhetoric. huang guowen (1988)believes there six kinds of structural cohesion of rhetorical modes. fan yanlong (2012) comes up with four rhetorical modes based on 15 english publicspeech on economy. david r. gruber (2016) explores “a stronger affectivedefense” theory of rhetorical modes. domestic scholars and foreign scholarshave done a lot of research on rhetorical modes, however their research arebased on the speeches of foreigners and few of them are based on english speechesmade by chinese people.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

this paper will be divided into five parts. the first part is the introduction, the general purpose of this paper and methods usedin this article. the second part is literature review, a review of previousresearch and a brief introduction to ted talks and common rhetorical modes usedin ted talks. the third part will be case study, analyze this six talks indetails and list their rhetorical modes in form. the fourth part is the effectof these rhetorical modes on china’s image and changes of foreigners’ attitudetoward china. the last part is the conclusion of this paper.
