On the Value of Cultural Context in Translation——With Special Reference to Color Words（论文化语境在翻译中的价值——关于颜色词）开题报告

1. 研究目的与意义

Recently, due to the fact that some translators ignore and even don''''t carethe original text, reasulting in a treachery fashion existing in the field of translation, which is unhealthy to the development of it. This dissertation aims to analyze the contemporary situation of translation and arouse the attention of translators to attach more importance to the context in translation, especially cultural context in this thesis. Accuracy of translation is what translators should contribute to, making that not only the authors#8217; original meaning which he or she wants to deliver to readers gets well delivered as another culture, but also our readers can acquire the marrow of another culture clearly, not just the superficiality.

Moreover, color words, which also matter in the content of translation and need to take serious consideration when translating, are chosen to be the special reference to conduct my study. Although color just has three primary kinds in the field of physics, it truly has many extended colors. It#8217;s necessary to be a specific part to be studied. After this study, our confidence of using color words to express or to translate will be definitely improved and strengthened. And people#8217;s concern of cultural context when translating will relatively get increased, so that the fashion of translation will be healthier and the development of translation will be on track.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This dissertation will first discuss the difference of thinking mode between Oriental and Western countries and then the difference of cultures will be manifested. This dissertation mainly consists of discussing comparison of the meaning of basic color words and comparison of extended meaning of color words. To the latter one, it explains color and national psychology and the social attributes of colors. And the latter one also includes three parts, including color and history, color and liturgical practices and color and economy, which will manifest a series of knowledge of color words and help us learn more the development of color words. What#8217;s more, some methods and techniques to translate color words will be summed up to help translators to learn from. Last but not least, reverting to my subject, the value of cultural context in translation, three values, namely, the social value, the aesthetic value and the pragmatic value will be stated to conclude my essay to visualize these values.

Why do we need to consider the cultural context when translating? What is the difference of thinking mode between Oriental and Western countries? Why do color words have such difference if cultural context isn#8217;t taken into consideration? What are the values of cultural context in translation? These types of problems would be primarily discussed in my paper.

3. 国内外研究现状

american sinologist john deeney has a renowned saying that, #8220;every language acquires nutrition of life from culture, so we can#8217;t just focus on how to translate one language into another, we must do our utmost to express the habit of the two cultures in modes of thinking and aspects of emotion expressing.#8221; moreover, our chinese master in translation wang zuoliang says, #8220;translators must be a genuine person of culture.#8221; from the two, obviously much importance is attached to culture which is an indispensable factor when doing translation.

what#8217;s more, when peter newmark analyzes the purposes of translation in about translation, he says that, #8220;the third propose of translation is to explain and mediate between cultures on the basis of a common humanity, respecting their strengths, implicitly exposing their weakness.#8221; so, to translators, knowing the cultural background is the first step to translation, that is, considering the cultural context in translation helps better deliver the original meaning of authors and helps readers absorb another culture more precisely.

considering the current situation that there exists an undesirable fashion of betraying in translation, which is the result of ignoring or even not caring the original text. however, it#8217;s unhealthy to the development of translation. so studying the value of cultural context in translation is meaningful.
