3. 国内外研究现状

studies on white noise change over times home and abroad. at abroad, the theme of death, consumption and information technology are the focuses of scholars. death is the most popular theme, as the novel is “the american book of the dead”(osteen,1998). white noise exposes a world where ways to die are growing insidiously, while structures to accept death are decreasing. however, the death in the book not only means that people and the society are facing the dread of death, but also shows that humans are trying to exorcise the dread to death, thus white noise is “the natural language of the species” (bonca,1996). information technology is another hot topic. technology has threatened america pervasively and mortally, and it has become a daily mode as people couldn’t live without it. it makes citizens discomfort and people are sufferingfromthe“symptomsofinformationillness” (conte, 2002). consumption is also an important theme of the novel. in white noise, delillo considered supermarketaspostmodern american’s emporiumof information and sign. consumption is controlling individual mode from the aspects of commodity, culture and rubbish. further more, consumption is believed that it has its own mode of thinking.

studies at home are much less than abroad. white noise is considered as the language to refuse death by humans and the novel discovers the radiance in dailiness. mental ecology is a new view to this novel, and it concludes that human civilisation contrasts natural ecology, the former of which pollutes the natural and social environment and the consumption-oriented postmodern society also changes human’s natural aesthetics. like foreign scholars, chinese scholars also study the novel in view of consumption by showing that the novel has constructed a consumerist society where alienation is faced in family, workplace and society. besides thetheme of death, mental ecology and consumption, recently, alienation is another hot theme. alienation arouses the crisis of trust and identity, the dread of death, the spread of mass media and the pollution of environment, from individuals to the society.
